MK Midwife - Midwifery

In the United Kingdom, Midwives are the most senior professional attendant at over 75% of births. Midwives are the experts in midwifery care for normal healthy childbearing women.

Midwives are able to recognize potential or actual problems that may arise during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period and plan your care appropriately.

Midwives are the only professionals concerned solely with maternity care. Doctors are the only other people legally allowed to attend births.

Independent Midwives are fully trained midwives who choose to work outside the National Health Service (NHS). Independent midwives maintain professional relationships with their colleagues within the NHS setting and are able to liaise with other agencies.

In 1994 professional indemnity insurance for self employed midwives was withdrawn, meaning that Independent Midwives practice without this insurance. Our aim is to build a close, honest and trusting relationship with you and with good midwifery practice, protect us all from unfortunate scenarios. Go to the Independent Midwives Association website for more information.

All midwives are strictly governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Local Supervisory Authority (LSA). The LSA, Supervisor of Midwives (SoM) supervises our practice and approves the equipment we carry.
