MK Midwife - About Me

Michelle Twiselton, Registered Midwife, BA (Hons) Women's Health

I am married to Geoff and together we have two children. Our family home is in Milton Keynes. Our first son, Alex, was born by caesarean birth and our second son, Lewis, was a spontaneous vaginal birth. My earliest childhood memory, of the excitement surrounding the birth of one of my younger sisters at home, always held my interest in childbirth.

After several years of working as ‘jack of all trades' I finally became ‘master of one' and registered as a Midwife in 1995, following 3 years of midwifery training. I worked within the NHS, from registration as a midwife, at Milton Keynes hospital and then as a community midwife in the local area. I thoroughly enjoyed caring for women and their families. I have many wonderful, positive experiences of women having births at home and hospital. I provided all aspects of antenatal, birth and postnatal care to women and their families including parent education (antenatal classes) and advice and support for breastfeeding mothers.

I left the NHS to work as an Independent Midwife as I felt the change would enable me to pursue greater fulfilment of my midwifery role. I had never felt such passion for work until I embarked on my midwifery career and believe I have reached my true vocation in life – working as an Independent Midwife.

My hobbies and interests include gardening and riding about on my motorbike!

MK Midwife - Midwifery

In the United Kingdom, Midwives are the most senior professional attendant at over 75% of births. Midwives are the experts in midwifery care for normal healthy childbearing women.

Midwives are able to recognize potential or actual problems that may arise during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period and plan your care appropriately.

Midwives are the only professionals concerned solely with maternity care. Doctors are the only other people legally allowed to attend births.

Independent Midwives are fully trained midwives who choose to work outside the National Health Service (NHS). Independent midwives maintain professional relationships with their colleagues within the NHS setting and are able to liaise with other agencies.

In 1994 professional indemnity insurance for self employed midwives was withdrawn, meaning that Independent Midwives practice without this insurance. Our aim is to build a close, honest and trusting relationship with you and with good midwifery practice, protect us all from unfortunate scenarios. Go to the Independent Midwives Association website for more information.

All midwives are strictly governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Local Supervisory Authority (LSA). The LSA, Supervisor of Midwives (SoM) supervises our practice and approves the equipment we carry.
